Aurora Over Grasslands
My 3.5-minute 6K music video records the great all-sky aurora show of August 11, 2024. I shot from the 70 Mile Butte trailhead at Grasslands National Park near Val Marie, Saskatchewan. Grasslands is a Dark Sky Preserve.
The aurora was underway in the twilight (as per the opening panorama) and covered the sky with colourful curtains. A wave of red rolled in from the east as a substorm hit after midnight. The red was visible to the unaided eye, unusual to be sure. Note the other colours such as magenta, orange and yellow that appear at times.
The night was also the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower and a few still images I included at the start of the video show a few Perseids I caug...

A Swirling Aurora Corona
Просмотров 140Месяц назад
This records a coronal outburst of an aurora on the morning of August 4, 2024, during a Kp5 to 6 aurora that was active all night. But here at about 4 am it moved to the zenith quite rapidly and began to dance! This is real-time video - it is not time-lapse and is not sped up. The camera is looking straight up to the zenith. The location was off Highway 1 near Bassano, Alberta, latitude 51° N. ...
The Satellite Strewn Sky

This 2-minute time-lapse movie documents the satellite-filled sky that is now a reality and getting more crowded every week! The movie is made of 4,232 frames taken over 4 hours, from 11:43 p.m. to 3:39 a.m. MDT - almost four hours from dusk to dawn - on June 4/5, 2024. The sequence repeats: the first clip is from frames rendered at 60 frames per second; the second clip is rendered at 30 fps bu...
The Great May Display of Northern Lights
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
My 2-minute video presents time-lapses of the great May 10, 2024 display of Northern Lights, widely seen around the world during a G5-level geomagnetic storm when the planetary Kp Index soared to level 8, a rare occurrence. I shot from my rural backyard in southern Alberta, Canada, at a latitude of 51° N. At my latitude we were north of the main arc of green aurora, though our sky still filled ...
The Total Eclipse of 2024
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.4 месяца назад
In this two-minute music video I present a collage of my still images, time-lapses and real-time movies of the April 8, 2024 total eclipse of the Sun. My location was on the eastern shore of Lac Brome in the Eastern Townships of Québec, Canada, a location chosen only a few days prior to the eclipse in a last-minute move from Texas, my long-planned destination, to eastern Canada. This was a dive...
Passage of Starlink Satellites (November 9, 2023)
Просмотров 3 тыс.10 месяцев назад
This 5-minute video records the passage of the train of SpaceX Starlink satellites of the G7-6 group launched October 29, 2023. I shot this on November 9, 2023, some 11 days after their launch, so the satellites had faded and spread out along their similar orbits. The location was at home in rural southern Alberta, latitude 51° N. This is real-time video, not time-lapse or sped up, and narrated...
Aurora in the Moonlight Sept 1 2023
Просмотров 266Год назад
I present a short collage of real-time video clips of the Northern Lights from September 1, 2023, taken from home in southern Alberta. The main clip has me on camera narrating the video. Illumination is from moonlight from the waning gibbous Moon off camera to the south. The geomagnetic level was about Kp4 this night, perhaps reaching closer to Kp5. The videos were shot with a Canon R6 at ISO 2...

This 3-minute video records the passage of the train of Starlink satellites of the G7-1 group launched August 22, 2023, but recorded here on the night of August 28, 2023. This is real-time video, not time-lapse or sped up, and narrated at the camera as the satellites appeared rising out the west and passing overhead where they disappeared into...
The Great April Aurora

My 3-minute music video is a montage of time-lapse sequences and real-time videos of the great all-sky aurora display of April 23, 2023. The geomagnetic activity level peaked at Kp8 this night, on a scale of 0 to 9. The clips show amazing activity ...

This short 30-second movie presents a time-lapse sequence shot on January 24, 2023 of Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) - the “green comet” - in motion against the background stars. The sequence is made of 120 frames shot over 2 hours, each frame being a 1-minute exposure at a focal le...

The 90-second movie presents two time-lapse sequences I shot of the 2022 Geminid meteor shower, taken from southern Alberta on December 14 on a cool, frosty night. The two sequences are: 500 frames on a static tripod - with a Canon R6 at ISO 1600 and Canon RF15-35mm lens at f/2.8, for 30 seconds each. 500 frames on a tracking mount - with a Canon R5 at ISO 800 and Canon RF28-70mm lens at f/2.0,...

The occultation was seen over a wide area of North America and Western Europe. ...
All Night Satellites

A beautiful illustration of the increasing pervasiveness of technology in our night sky. It gives us a moment to enjoy its beauty, the chance to reflect on its consequences, and an opportunity to ensure that its effect does not irreversibly damage the natural beauty of the universe. Thank you Alan.

The cost of bringing education and connectivity to the world. It is worth it though. Knowledge is key to short term safety and long term prosperity for those of us not fortunate enough to have fixed infrastructure on the ground.

And do you know how many third world countries and citizens are using Starlink or other LEO systems for their internet, or can afford to? That market can be and is served by geosats and conventional cell systems. The low latency of LEO satellite systems is designed to serve one primary and profitable sector: banking and stock trading. Not impoverished areas. But check on Starlink's customer base and where the profits come from. Report back -- I'd be interested to learn more.
